Learn Mandarin online - Bird flu outbreaks threat reduced

Bird flu outbreaks threat reduced
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2006-03-19 09:22

As long as the immunization policy is carried out properly, the
possibilities for an outbreak of bird flu in many areas will be
remarkably reduced, said Jia Youling, national chief veterinary officer,
on Saturday in Beijing.

At a press conference held by the Ministry of Agriculture, Jia said the
country has provided 2.967 billion vaccines to local departments to stem
the spread of bird flu.

Most of the areas will be well prepared by the time migratory birds fly
north in mid-April, Jia said.

At the same time, relevant departments are ready to make new vaccines to
cope with any variants of the virus, he said, adding the vaccine that has
been developed can prevent the current virus.

"The most crucial measure is that all fowls must be injected with the
vaccine," he said.

Since China took such measures from October 2005, the spread of bird flu
has been contained. Three outbreaks have been confirmed so far this year,
46 less than during the same period in 2004. The 35 cases reported in
2005 have all been controlled.

As the virus can easily spread during spring, the ministry has urged
local departments to ensure the above measures are implemented, Jia said.

The ministry has sent 28 supervisory groups to different regions of the
country to inspect their work, and the preparation is satisfactory, he
said.

Chinese Mandarin - Focus on building character

Opinion / Li Xing

Focus on building character

By Li Xing (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-12 07:48

I had an opportunity to take part in a television talk show on Sunday -
the chief guest being a prominent banker in Asia. However, the show was
not about economics and finance.

With distinguished professors of English and others sitting in the
audience, we started by harking back to the days when the national
college entrance examination was restored after a decade of suspension.

There was a lot of nostalgia about those days, 30 years ago. The students
of the 77-78 classes - whether enrolled in undergraduate or graduate
programs - were thankful for the merit-based tests that enabled them to
realize their almost lost dreams and fulfill their thirst for knowledge.

Meanwhile, the teachers shared fond memories of their students - their
passion, honesty and determination for knowledge - characteristics rare
in today's youngsters.

From the talks, I detected a divide between the elderly and the young
over the purpose of college education. The elderly emphasized how college
education could help broaden students' knowledge, shape their characters
and enhance their qualities. They lamented the fact that students today
can only sit in the classroom for a full two years of serious studies.

But the young seemed to be more concerned about what colleges have to
offer to enable them get good jobs. One complained that today's colleges
have not equipped students with enough specific skills to excel in the
competitive job market.

While I am sympathetic with the youngsters, I do agree with the
professors that college education should contribute to the making of a
fine person or a talent, above anything else.

College education should help students lay a good foundation so that they
will be able to come up with questions, search for answers and master and
improve the necessary skills on their own later in their careers. They
must acquire the abilities in college to adapt themselves to different
environments independently so that wherever they go after graduation they
will perform to their best.

It is a pity, however, that in the past 30 years no matter how much
education has advanced, it sometimes steers away from lofty goals. While
some high school students do not have time to prepare for independent
studies in colleges, colleges have not reorganized their programs in such
a flexible way for the early encouragement of undergraduates to freely
roam in a more broad-based, cross-disciplinary knowledge sphere,
especially relating to liberal arts and sciences.

Today's youngsters are trained to be reliant first on their parents, and
then their teachers, so much so that despite there being numerous
programs available in colleges, students still complain about the
deficiencies in skill training.

What is worse is that quite a number of companies, institutions and other
employers often look for specific skills in the resumes, overlooking the
overall quality of potential candidates.

If a banker graduated with a master's degree in English literature and
Shakespearean studies, could he still have got a job in the finance
sector today? I doubt it.

It was a pity that no one thought of asking the banker during the show
the secret of how he turned himself from a Shakespearean scholar into a
financial administrator and later a financier and a banker.

He said opportunities come only to those who are prepared. Hopefully,
current college education will reform itself to make every student as
prepared as the banker.

World Bank: China's GDP up 8.3% in 2005

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-28 14:40:05

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 27 (By Liu Yuying) - "China Quarterly Update",
released by the World Bank today, reveals that due to restrained credit
growth and profit declines, China's growth of domestic demand (special
investment) would slow further. The growth rate of the GDP is likely to
hit 8.3%, while the rate of inflation should stand at 3.5%.
The World Bank's analysis points out that as domestic demand cools down,
fixed asset investment would increase 17.2% annually in the first quarter
of 2005 at a growth rate lower than last year's 24.9%. Fixed asset
investment has been diverted from over-heated industries (such as steel
and cement) to other sectors. The policies implemented in 2004 have been
functioning properly.
The World Bank estimates that in 2005, China's macro-economic prospects
will remain favorable. However, it still faces risks in terms of the
domestic and international markets. On the side of the domestic market,
there are risks emanating from the over-heated economy. Actual interest
rates will continue to stand at low levels and investment may rebound as
long as local governments' mechanisms for spurring economic growth remain
unchanged. From the point of view of the international market, although
China's stable status, which includes a moderate scale of foreign loans,
could act as a buffer, the biggest risk lies in the slowdown of economic
growth in major markets.
According to the World Bank, it is reasonable for the Chinese government
to adopt prudent policies in terms of currency and finance. In the long
run, implementation of increased exchange rate flexibility confirmed by
the government could help currency reform focus on domestic policy goals.

Whom do you love more, your wife or your computer?

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-19 09:06:58

Chinanews, Nanjing, July 19 C Your husband is indulged in playing cyber
games, watching comics, or listening to rock'n'roll music. If you ever
complain, he will immediately say that he is bound by the marriage life.
Who has taken your husband's heart away from you? Not a young girl but
the computer in your house, the Nanjing Morning Post reported.
In China, more and more husbands tend to live a life like this. Most of
these people are quite young (under the age of 30). Although they are
already married, and some of them even have become fathers, they still
keep their old habit C playing computers. It is a pity that young wives
have to compete with a computer to gain the attention of their husbands.
Xiao Xu has been married for nearly a year now. She said that during the
past one year, there might be only 20 days when her husband could sleep
beside her; while in the rest of the time, when she was already fast
asleep, her husband might still sit by his computer searching for
information.
Xiao Xu's husband is a comic lover. Every day, he spends a large amount
of time searching for information about comics online. Xiao Xu is worried
about her husbands health.
Normally, he won't go to bed until one or two o'clock the next morning,
or even later than that, probably until 4 or 6 o'clock. Then, he will
just lie on the sofa for a couple of hours before he wakes up again to go
to work. Every morning, he has a hard time getting up. Even the two alarm
clocks can't wake him up, Xiao Xu told this reporter, feeling worried
but not knowing what she could do. So every morning, I have to wake him
up at the last minute before I leave home.
Like Xiao Xu, Xiao Tian was also bothered by her husband's love for
online games.
My husband comes home only on weekends. Even for these two days, he
will try to make good use of his time by enjoying computer games. He
usually plays until mid night before going to sleep. Sometimes he stays
awake for the whole night. I once suggested that he could play during the
day but he didnt listen. He just loves playing games at night. So we
two have a complete different living habits, Xiao Tian said.
Once, Xiao Tian's husband said to her that he felt staying at home was
more tiring than working. But as long as he is at home, he will love to
sit beside his computer, Xiao Tian said.
Now the couple has a very cold relationship.
I have got used to sleeping alone. Even so, I can't complain because I
know that if I complain, he will say that he encounters great pressure
living with me. My complaint will kill his hobby, Xiao Tian said sadly.
For Ms. Cheng, her problem might only be slightly different from the
above two ladies.
My husband loves to read mystery novels and science fictions. He also
likes to play computer games. Every day, he won't go to sleep until after
midnight, Cheng said.
Ms. Cheng lives far away from her office. Every day she has to go to bed
before 10:30 in the evening so that she can wake up at 6:30 the next
morning. However, every evening, her husband strikes the keyboard loudly
in the room, making her unable to sleep. The two had many quarrels over
this issue. They almost got divorced. Finally, Ms. Cheng gave in. She
chose to get used to it.
I won't tell him to do this or that any more. It doesn't work, it will
only spoil our relationship. I will just try to adapt to it, Ms. Cheng
said.

Chinese mainland actress Chen Hao has been chosen as the most beautiful
woman in China in an online poll featuring more than one million
voters.(File Photo)

July 13 - Chinese mainland actress Chen Hao has been chosen as the most
beautiful woman in China in an online poll featuring more than one
million voters, reports CRI.
The actress shot to fame for her role in TV series "Pink Ladies", which
was adapted from Taiwan cartoonist Zhu Deyong's comic book. Chen Hao
played one of the leading roles in "Pink Ladies" as a sexy and adorable
lady that manipulates the guys. The drama later turned out to be a super
hit all across Asia's Chinese community.
Other identities in the top 10 included Yang Lan, a TV hostess and
entrepreneur, Annie Yi, a Taiwan singer and actress, and Yu Dan, a
professor and media scholar, says CRI.
The poll began in April and initially featured 100 candidates from all
circles of life.
Voters then reduced the list to 50, based on criteria including their
reputations, achievements, personalities and contributions to the
society, the organizer said.
Over one million people attended the online poll conducted on Sina.com,
the web site reported. The result was determined according to the public
votes and the opinions of the jury team.

Two bln mice invade Hunan province

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-10 09:45:38

(Source: Xinhua)

July 10 - An estimated 2 billion field mice are chomping their way
hungrily through crops in 22 counties around the Dongting Lake in central
China's Hunan Province after their homes on islands in the lake were
flooded.
Local authorities in Yiyang, Yuanjiang, Junshan and Huarong are rushing
to build walls and dig ditches to keep the mice away from flood-control
dikes and cropland.
The mice burrow through the dikes and spread out into cropland, eating
crops and posing a threat to human health. They could contribute to
flooding because it is the rainy season in the area, said experts with
the Hunan provincial office of plant protection and quarantine.
In Yiyang, to the north of Dongting Lake, a long wall and a 30-60 cm deep
ditch have been built on the lakeside to resist the mice invasion. On
Monday the ditch was alive with mice, and a thick, dark wedge of mice
jostled and heaved at the foot of the wall.
Local residents used clubs and shovels to kill the mice by the score.
Some lowered down fishing nets to catch the mice alive, catching several
kilograms of mice at each attempt.
More than 2.25 million mice -- about 90 tons of rodent -- have been
killed since June 21, local authorities said.
The massive invasion of field mice began on June 23 when the Yangtze
River flooded, raising the water level in Dongting Lake and submerging
mouse holes on islands in the lake, said Hunan plant protection experts.
In Yuanjiang, Junshan and Huarong, where local people were slower to
build walls and ditches, mice have already damaged flood-control dikes
and ruined crops.
The mice threat is not over with more floods forecast in the upper
reaches of the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake, said experts.

Property market booms again in Shanghai

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-04 17:46:08

Chinanews, Shanghai, July 4 C Since the Spring Festival in mid-February,
transaction of houses has increased month by month. Statistics show that
in June, transaction of new houses hit a new high after it reached a
record high in last May. In June, about 2.4 million square meters of
houses were sold. As the housing transaction increased, housing price
climbed accordingly.
Despite the hot sales of houses, this reporter saw that in Shanghai,
house buyers were rather cool-headed. Although many people wanted to buy
a new house to improve their living conditions, they wanted to buy their
houses at a reasonable price.
The bullish stock market also pushed up the prices in housing market. I
once wanted to buy a house. However, recently I noticed that the price of
that house had gone up by several hundred yuan for per square meter. So I
have decided to postpone my purchase plan, said Mr. Gao, who worked for
an insurance company.
After experiencing the depressed property market not long ago, both house
buyers and potential buyers in Shanghai have reacted calmly to the
current boom in property market.
Experts say that the current house transaction boom is boosted by
peoples rebounding demand for houses and the bullish performance of the
stock market. However, such boom can only last for a short period.
Analysts predict that such housing boom will start to decline during the
second half of the year. In addition, these experts say that the rising
housing price is not pushed solely by peoples demand, but it is also
resultant from the relative shortage of house supply.

China raises export tariffs on textiles

www.chinanews.cn 2004-12-13 16:03:21

Chinanews, Dec.13-China will raise export tariffs on some certain
textiles in preparation for the upcoming integration of global trade, the
Chinese Ministry of Commerce said here Sunday.
All quotas restricting textile and clothing trade between the World Trade
Organization (WTO) members are to be eliminated by December 31, 2004,
according to the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing.
The tariff will help encourage the export of high value-added products
and optimize the mix of Chinese textile exports. Ministry of Commerce
spokesman Chong Quan said "The tariff rate will be set by considering the
conditions of textile manufacturers."
"The government encourages domestic companies to run businesses abroad
and will facilitate their trade and offer favorable policies for textile
companies intending overseas investment and getting involved in
globalization," he said.
Various trade promotion measures will be taken to encourage textile and
clothing corporations to create their own brands and increase input in
research, development and design so that they can enhance their
competency.
Chong called on Chinese manufacturers to prepare for increased trade
protectionism against China and other difficulties following the end of
textile quotas.
