forzagrifo -

Hi all,

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, but left for Canada when I was 12 after graduating from
elementary school. I'm now 30 and have come back to HK for work for a few years now, and since I
had stopped learning Chinese in school during my many years in Canada, I feel I need to sharpen up
my Chinese, especially the vocab, 四字词, 成语, etc.

The Chinese language is such a beautiful language, that being a Chinese, I feel ashamed for not
knowing more about it. Recently I chatted with a Mainlander on QQ and when she said 伯乐, I
didn't know what it means. I feel so ashamed of myself. But I try to learn more every day.

Anyway, my question is, is there any website or books you guys recommend for someone like me?
Materials that are more advanced for someone who wants to expand his vocab, 四字词, 成语, etc?

Any advice appreciated. TIA.

P.S. That song by 周杰伦 -- 七里香 -- I've heard it many times before, but I didn't realize
until today how beautiful the lyrics are. "A picture tells a thousand words"? How about "a word
tells a thousand pictures"?

You might want to look at
中国文化中的典型人物与事件 陈贤纯 -编者,北京语言大学出版社。

The book covers a lot of famous events and famous people (including 伯乐). In other words, it
provides you with a quick brush up with common historic and cultural refrences that almost all
Chinese people know.

It also gives you example sentences of how the refrences are used in modern life.

I suggest reading all of 金庸's novels (reserve and borrow them from our libraries). If you like
them you will finish them really quickly. Re-read them again and start to learn from them.

Learning materials are so dry ...

And since you are in HK, unless there are reasons for using the simplified script, why don't you
switch to the traditional script?

Good luck.

forzagrifo -

Thank you both for your recommendations.

To skylee: Which of the 金庸 novels do you recommend? Which one is the most interesting to read?

I'm not really a novel person, although I've read 三国 (the abridged version) a few years ago, a
bunch of 卫斯理 and 亦舒 in my teens. Had wanted to read 金庸 but never really found the
time nor interest to take it up. Perhaps this is now the excuse I need.

Regarding the simplified script. I use it because I got used to it working with Mainlanders, and
because I can learn Mandarin with the pinyin input system. Even when posting on HK forums I use
simplified script.

skylee -

Perhaps you could try 笑傲江湖 first? It has a very interesting story and there are only 4
volumes (unlike the most popular "Condor" series which consists of there stories each of 4
volumes). You may not learn a lot of idioms etc from them but surely you would learn something
such as who 令狐沖 is etc. And you would get to enjoy the good story. haha.

I too use pinyin input method (PRC) when I type Chinese. But I have set the output to traditional
Chinese. I am one of those people who feel strongly about the need to use traditional Chinese in
HK. But nevermind me.

Half of China's oil consumption will be imported by 2010

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-18 17:53:04

Chinanews, Beijing July 18 C The Social Sciences Documentation
Publishing House of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences published the
2006 energy blue paper titled China Energy Development Report. The
report predicts that in 2010, 50% of Chinas energy consumption will be
imported from other countries. However, the Chinese government is taking
measures to try to reduce Chinas reliance on foreign imports for its
oil energy consumption. Last year, Chinas oil imports decreased by 2.2%
compared with the previous year.
In 2005, China imported 136 million tons, or 42.9% of its oil from other
countries, showing a decrease of 7.56 million tons, or a decrease of 5.3%
from a year before.
In order to safeguard the nation oil safety, the blue paper suggests that
China should take measures in various aspects. These include reducing
reliance on oil imports, actively participating in international oil
market competition, and strengthening cooperation with other countries.
In future, most of Chinas crude oil imports will come from the Middle
East region. So in addition to transporting oil from the Strait of
Malacca, the blue paper suggests to open another crude oil transporting
channel in the southern region of Thailand, in order to guarantee a
sufficient oil supply. In addition, establishing the Northeast Asian
Energy Community would be conducive to the multi-polarization of world
development, the paper said.
A good oil conservation system will guarantee the energy supply safety.
In light of this, the blue paper suggests China to set up national and
regional oil conservation systems, and actively develop oil substitutes.

Trade surplus of China will be $150 billion

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-13 17:34:16

Chinanews, Beijing, July 13 - China usually exports more goods in the
second half of the year, thus economists estimated that China's trade
surplus would be $130 billion to $150 billion. China had a trade surplus
of $101.88 billion last year, a record high, so there will be a new
record in China's giant trade surplus against USA and EU.
The General Administration of Customs publicized China's value of
external trade of the first half of 2006. The total value between January
and June was $795.74 billion, 23.4% up from last year. The export value
was $428.59 billion, 25.2% up from last year, and the import value was
$367.15 billion. Thus the trade surplus value is $61.44 billion.
Growth in the export value reflects the great needs for Chinese products
in the international market, while drop in the import value is the result
of decreased reliance on materials from abroad.
The Chinese Government has raised the lending rate, and set limitations
on loaning to make sure that there will be no production overplus with
the economic growth rate of over 10%. However, these methods can not help
to reduce China's trade surplus.
Qu Hongbing, an economist of HSBC Groups, said that what the Chinese
government had done to control the overheat in investment would only lead
to a greater amount of trade surplus in the second half of 2006, as they
might restrain import. He also said that high energy consuming industries
like aluminum and steel production would be the key target of the Chinese
government, thus it might take the advice on cutting the tax
reimbursement for export of the products of these industry.

RMB internationalization must be urged

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-01 16:16:02

(Source: Xinhua)

July 1 - The article, written by Li Daokui, head of the Center for China
in the World Economy with the prestigious Tsinghua University, said the
status of Renminbi is completely out of proportion with the Chinese
economy, which is now the fourth biggest in the world.
All economies bigger than China had an internationalized currency, he
said.
"If Chinese enterprises and government could issue RMB-denominated bonds
in the international market, then even if the exchange rate fluctuates,
Chinese enterprises and the government would not need to worry about a
crisis of international payments.... This is the biggest benefit for a
developing country to have a hard currency," the article said.
An internationalized RMB would also free Chinese enterprises from
exchange rate risks in international trade, because their costs and sales
revenue would be both calculated in RMB, Li said.
The article said the ongoing appreciation of the RMB yuan provided China
with a good opportunity to promote RMB as a hard currency by issuing
yuan-denominated bonds on the international market.

The nightlife in Beijing

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-21 08:52:23

Chinanews, June 20 (by Zhong Xiaoling) - The coming of the night in
Beijing does not necessarily mean the cease of the hustle and bustle of
the city. On the contrary, it means the start of a day to many people,
the start of their real life, their nightlife. On the streets of Beijing
at night, pubs and bars are crowded; songs can be heard from the KTVs;
and sidewalk stalls are finally open. However, different people in
Beijing have different nightlives.
A decent and luxurious nightlife comes only from decent income.
Furthermore, people with decent income usually do not have time to
entertain themselves in the day, as their jobs are very demanding. Their
nightlife usually starts at 6 pm (the time for the end of a days work)
and ends at 2 am except on holidays. If there were no stipulating
regulations that all entertainment places must close before 2 AM, they
would very much love to enjoy themselves for a longer time everyday.
People of the above group usually like the nightlife at bars, KTVs and
restaurants. Bars in Beijing are very famous all around China. There are
music bars, movie bars, band bars and some other theme bars. A lot of the
bars are located near Sanlitun, Chaoyang Park, Yansha Shopping Mall and
Houhai. The bars as well as the customers make these places very lively
and crowded. Beijingers are fond of going to the most popular nightclubs
and other night entertainment venues, thus one has to make a reservation
if he wants to spend a night in a popular night place, especially on
holidays. This is good news to keepers of the bars, anyway.
KTV is another good place to kill the night. Qiangui, Melody, and
The-Same-Old-Song are the three most popular KTVs. Their chain stores can
be found in many places in Beijing. Many office workers like to entertain
their friends and themselves by some songs after work.
Good food is another basic necessity in a well-off nightlife. Beijing is
a city famous for its snacks. As the capital of China, delicacies from
all over the country can be found here, too. Longfusi, Wangfujing and
Guijie are the three places famous for their delicacies. Every night the
belly-gods from all over Beijing, even from all over the world come here
to ease the tiredness of the day with the delicious food here. The best
thing of being a gourmet in Beijing is that good food can be found
everywhere in the city, not only at three places above. Young people in
Beijing like to gather a large group of people through the Internet to
try some delicacies together. This is a good way to discover some
hidden delicacies and make new friends.
People with lower incomes sure have the right to enjoy the nightlife,
too, but in a different style. To them, enjoyment of the night comes from
the little food stalls in the alleys. The refreshments from such stalls
lift them up from the weariness of the day. Behind the sweetness from
these stalls, the sanitary problem should not be overlooked. The urban
management personnel often spring surprise inspections on these food
stalls, but not at all effective. Every time after the inspection, the
stalls resume their business within less than half an hour. The end of
the nightlife of lower-income people usually comes before 10 pm. Some of
them even have to spend the night in front of the TV or chatting with
friends, as they cant afford anything else.
Nightlife in Beijing doesnt necessarily entails tiredness and
noisiness. Many choose to spend their nights going for a walk in the
streets, doing shopping, seeing movies or surfing the Internet. As a
metropolis, Beijing is capable of providing all kinds of recreational
activities, though you have to find them yourselves.

China, Group of Eight discuss global economy

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-11 14:56:50

(Source: Xinhua)

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, June 10 - Finance ministers from China and five
other countries discussed global economic prospects and public finance
management on Saturday with financial chiefs of the Group of Eight (G8)
leading industrialized nations.
Chinese Finance Minister Jin Renqing was joined by top finance officials
from India, Brazil, Australia, South Korea and Nigeria at the discussion
with G8 finance ministers, who are here for a two-day meeting.
Speaking at the G8 plus six meeting, Jin said prospects for global
economic growth remain good but high energy prices, rising interest
rates, increasing volatility on international financial markets and
growing trade protectionism constitute risks to growth.
On public finance management, the Chinese minister said the world
community and international financial institutions should support
developing countries' efforts to improve their public finance management,
respect their choice of methods to manage public finance and help them
create a management system that would improve the investment environment
and promote economic growth.
Jin also briefed the finance officials on the measures China has taken in
public finance management and its achievements.
Russia chairs the G8 presidency this year. At one of a series of meetings
in the run-up to next month's G8 summit, G8 finance ministers opened
their main session of discussion Saturday to debate, among other issues,
global economic growth, the impact of high oil prices on global growth
and energy security.

Tianjin gets the nod for new-area plan

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-07 08:55:51

(Source: China Daily)

June 7 - The port city of Tianjin has finally won the central
government's approval for its development zone dubbed "Pudong of North
China" by international investors.
In a statement released yesterday by the State Council, the cabinet,
Binhai New Area was officially designated an experimental zone for
comprehensive reform, with a short-term emphasis on financial and allied
services.
Tianjin is 120 kilometres southeast of Beijing; and Binhai is 50
kilometres away from the city's downtown.
For the last couple of years, the Binhai plan has been promoted by the
municipality's officials as of key importance for the port city's future
development.
But the significance of the Binhai New Area will be far greater than the
potential benefit for just one city.
At a meeting on promoting Binhai's development organized by the State
Council yesterday, Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan said: "The development of
Binhai New Area is of strategic importance in China's economic and social
development. Its development will promote the growth of Beijing and
Tianjin municipalities, Hebei Province and areas around the Bohai Sea."
The Binhai New Area, which covers nearly 2,300 square kilometres, will be
turned into a gateway to North China, a modern manufacturing and research
base and an international shipping and logistics centre, he said.
A series of experimental schemes will be launched in Binhai, according to
the State Council announcement, including financial initiatives, land
administration methods, a bonded area and preferential tax policies.
The government will allow Binhai to pilot key reforms related to
financial services and the capital market, and to be more open to
international business development. Experimental schemes may also cover
areas of venture capital, foreign exchange administration and offshore
banking.
The reform in land administration will focus on efficient use of
available resources. Tianjin Dongjiang Bonded Area will be set up in the
new area with an emphasis on international distribution, global
procurement and export processing.
The development of the bonded area will be open to international

Chinese steelmakers pressured by iron ore price hike

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-25 15:31:49

Chinanews, May 25 - Negotiation on iron ore prices have entered the
fiercest and most sensitive moment. It was learnt on the 24th that the
French company Arcelor had accepted a 19 percent hike in iron ore prices.
The situation is gradually pushing Chinese steel manufacturers towards
fighting a lonely battle.
Reports say that on May 24th, Brazilian iron ore supplier Companhia Vale
do Rio Doce (CVRD) told the press that since steel plants such as
Germany's Thyssen Krupp and South Korea's Posco had accepted the 19
percent iron ore price hike, Arcelor, the world's second largest steel
manufacturer, has recently agreed with CVRD on the same iron ore price
hike in the 2006 fiscal year. Information from many sources shows that
though Nippon Steel Corporation has not stated its position on this
issue, it will very likely follow Arcelor.
CVRD has adopted a tough stance in the current situation. Reports say
that its financial director Fabio Barbosa indicated they have completed
prices negotiations with most European steel plants, and have made
progress with the biggest buyer, Chinese steel manufacturers. They have
not and will not set a different price. Market analysts conjecture that
Chinese steelmakers and their negotiating representative Baosteel are now
confronted with unprecedented pressure.
It is learnt that last year China's iron ore imports from Australia made
up approximately 40 percent of the country's total and iron ore imports
from Brazil constituted around 20 percent. Can China make a breakthrough
in its negotiations with Australia? Analysts note that this would be
quite difficult to accomplish, judging from Australian iron ore giant's
attitude in this year's negotiations.
