I think a combination of these two sites is probably the best bet for a beginner.
http://www.stpinyin.com/pinyin/pinyin.htm
Start from Pinyin: Alphabet of Pinyin (with .wav audio)
http://treehouse.ofb.net/go/zh-cn/ma.../pronunciation
Mandarin Chinese Pronunciation Guide (no audio)

These following sites are also helpful, but no single one is ideal for the beginner.
http://www.courses.fas.harvard.edu/~pinyin/#intro
Chinese pronunciation guide from Harvard's Chinese program (potentially good, but maybe
technologically a little out of date as I had trouble getting the RealAudio working).

http://weber.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/chin/pinyin1.html
Guide to Pronouncing Mandarin in Romanized Transcription (audio provided).

http://www.csulb.edu/~txie/pcr/sound...rotopinyin.htm
A Brief Introduction to Romanized spelling system of Chinese - Pinyin (.wav audio).

http://chinese.rutgers.edu/class_con...ass1/intro.htm
Rutger University's Multi-Media Chinese Teaching System: Chinese Pronunciation (no audio for the
pinyin guide, but audio is provided for other online lessons).

http://www.pinyinpractice.com/tones.htm
This site is good for practicing your pinyin.

http://www.sinosplice.com/lang/pronunciation/
Pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese (great discussion, but a little technical and not for the
beginner).

Hi guys

I've just moved to Shang Di area in Beijing- and it's pretty far out there.
I'm staying with a friend of mine- he's renting an appartment out here- so we went with the
landlord to the the police station and they refuse to register me!

they say that during the olympics, all foreigners are supposed to stay in hotels (which is just
bizzare). And wont register me!

As a solution, Im thinking to rent a room here and then try to register- maybe that way they will
register?

Is Beijing on crack this summer?

Just yesterday I heard that you can only let relatives (and there only immediate relatives,
apparently, though I have yet to see anything written) stay in your place for the duration of the
Olympics.

imron -

Haha, I wonder what will happen to all those people looking to rent out their apartments/spare
rooms for $$$ during the olympics.

onebir -

They restrict the hotels foreigners can stay in - pushing up the prices & making it harder to find
one. Then they force foreigners to stay in them.

Anyone would think the country was being run by the hoteliers party.

Did you have a rental contract? I've been asked for one when subletting...

self-taught-mba -

Considering that the gov't has put out guidelines for homestay costs and have put out an appeal
for additional host families . . .

this looks not right.

i want to study medicine in china and can anyone suggest me a medical school that teach medicine
to foreigners in guangdong(except guangzhou),guanxi, hunan, like these provinces near to
guangdong. Its better if its near to guangdong but even if its far and in the beautiful city i can
consider. It seems pretty hard to get admission as university do not reply our emails and tell us
to contact agents, how to know which agents are working for which universities.Chinese university
are depriving basic educational information right to the foreign students just to breed some
agents and that is pretty bad .If any one can recommend any medical university---i will be glad.
They will not reply from website or some websites are fake that is not made by school rather by
agents or fake agents --seems getting admission is too hard for anyone who do not come through
agent. But i have regularly told i will pay agent that university has hired but why can not i do
admission without agent letter. Most agents are outside china and how to contact them>?i will pay
them what ever fees is allocated to them but can i do admission from university directly paying
those folks too...seems educational system in chinese most universities are just like a local shop
,too bad system.do not think am writing wrong,i have spend 2 months looking for school and send
100 plus emails to schools..some say sorry we do not take direct admission ,some say contact
agents of your country etc. etc.any recommendation will be great.thank you

Hi,

I'm just getting started learning Mandarin and I'm looking for a good English-Chinese portable
electronic dictionary, with pronounciations included. Anyone have any recommendations?

Did you try searching the forums for "electronic dictionary"?

There are quite a few threads that answer this question quite thoroughly.
The general consensus seems to be that a Palm/Smartphone running Plecodict is your best bet.

alexkos -

I'd recommend you a CASIO Chinese-English-Chinese dictionary
pros:
-really nice dictionaries, more than an average student needs
-handwriting input for hanzi (new models)
-HQ screen, backlight
-convenient keyboard, rather fast input methods
-AAA batteries power suply
cons:
-bigger than PDA
-you cannot expand the dictionary (the majority of students never do it)

Shadowdh -

I would recommend Plecodict as the number one choice... its without a doubt the best there is. In
class I use it all the time, out on the street I use it all the time, in my room studying I use it
all the time, heck even one of my class mates who has a dedicated electronic dictionary asks me to
find characters from our text books in Pleco as he cannot find them in his (not cheap) elect. dict.

alexkos -

IMHO, you'd need a PDA with 640*480 (VGA) screen to view hanzi text (I had a HP 2410, 320*240 and
I have Dell x51v, VGA right now)
but casio offers HQ displays for a nice price...
still, CASIO is only a dictionary... you can do more with a PDA... i.e. e-mail, skype, msn etc...

imron -

My palm tungsten t5 has a screen resolution of 320x480, and it handles Hanzi without any problems.
I don't really use it for anything except Pleco.

The great thing about Pleco is not just that it's a dictionary, but that it's a dictionary with a
built-in flashcard system that makes it trivial to review items that you've looked up previously.
A major failing I find with most electronic dictionaries is that words are quick to look up, and
then quick to forget.

alexkos -

imron, that's a good feature, certainly an advantage of pleco...

you can try downloading a demo from their website
just find somebody with a PDA, put that demo on an SD card and try it

Shadowdh -

I am using an MDA Vario III (which is a variant of the HTC TyTN II) and it has a QVGA screen at a
res of 320x240 and it does the job nicely... clear and easy to read... I did worry it was going to
be too small but thankfully its not. I not only use Pleco but also use it to read in Chinese...
actually I should say practice reading in Chinese...

roddy -

I would say the 240*320 screens are fine for dictionary type use - you're not dealing with large
chunks of text, you're likely to be only using it for a minute or two here and there, not for
extended periods, and when it comes to flashcards you're only going to have a few characters on
screen at any one time so you can bump up the font size.

However for actually sitting down and reading ebooks or the Internet in Chinese, I find 240*320
too small, after having moved from the TX with the 480*320 screen. That said, I'm not sure how
much of the difference is screen resolution and how much is screen size. Fine for reading English,
after a bit of acclimatization, but I just haven't been able to get the hang of reading Chinese on
it for more than a few minutes without getting irritated.

I was always under the assumption that 多 is pronounced duō. I've been working through the FSI
course (rather slowly), and in the fifth and sixth units of the BIO module, 多大 is taught as
duódà and 多久 as duójiǔ. FSI does that kind of thing often (e.g. teaching 中國人 as
Zhōngguorén instead of Zhōngguórén and 七個 (likewise for 八個) as qíge instead of qīge
or qīgè) to make the pronunciation more accurate, but I have never seen 多 taught as duó in my
life. Can anyone, perhaps a native speaker, verify this?

Not a native speaker but I can attest to the fact that everywhere in Taiwan and China I've been
it's definitely pronounced duo1.

If you have questions like this on tones you can check an actual Chinese dictionary online
(Chinese to Chinese):

http://dict.revised.moe.edu.tw/cgi-b...op=f&imgFont=1

That particular dictionary is from Taiwan, tones may change for some words but this one should be
as consistent as they get from region to region.

HashiriKata -

@dsrguru: I'm not a native speaker but your observation above is all correct, and it is quite
common for 多大 to be pronounced as duódà and 多久 as duójiǔ. The only thing I'd say is
that if you would like to imitate, just imitate the combinations you've actually heard (ie, not
yourself create new ones).
(干吗 is also pronounced as gan4ma2, by the way)

skylee -

Some of the posts in this thread are relevant ->
http://www. From Beijing Chinese School.com rather than with this site's search feature (I got the idea from you), but
that thread didn't come up. I think I searched for 多 duó rather than 多 duo2. Note to self:
remember to search for pinyin both with tone marks and with numbers. When did that dictionary say
to pronounce 多 as duó? I tried using Google Translator to get a very general idea but it came
out even worse than normal:

Quote:

Xi radical and more radical, three strokes of six strokes
Pronunciation of a building ㄨ ㄛ ˊ
Tongyong Pinyin duó Phonetic two-duó

Deputy
How, how. Table doubt, laments the tone. Such as: "good" and "high" and "brought up a child how
Burongyia!"

skylee -

Quote:

The dictionary says it is used as an adverb (which is what the character "副" means) and
pronounced duó in exclamation and to express doubt. Examples are "How nice!" ("多好"), "How
hard it is to bring up a child!" ("帶大一個孩子是多麼不容易啊!") , etc.

dsrguru -

Okay, thanks. That still leaves question phrases like 多大, 多久, and 多少. I'm guessing
based on necroflux's and HashiriKata's posts that they can be pronounced either way, but I'm a
little wary of this. I think I'll follow FSI (duó) until native speakers tell me it sounds weird.

zhxlier -

Native speaker here. Born and raised in Beijing, so I can only speak of the situation in Beijing.

My impression: when used as an adverb, 多 can be pronounced as both duo1 and duo2.
When pronounced duo1, it sounds more formal and neutral.
When pronounced duo2, it sounds more casual and/or emotional.

Example, if I'm shopping, I'd ask "多(duo1) 少钱?“ (How much?)
If I learned that someone bought this 4-bedroom luxury house, I'd say
"那得花多(duo2)少钱啊!" (Imagine HOW MUCH that would cost!)
But even in these context, duo1 and duo2 are still exchangeable.

Of course, when used an an adjective, 多 is always pronounced duo1 (as in 许多).

dsrguru -

zhxlier, thank you very much.

I was given this name a couple years ago. I've been to China a couple times and it seems that this
name is kind of strange as Ihave to visually depict the first character and then state:
老虎的虎。 I'm aware of the similarity (if mispronounced),with 爱护。 Does this
name sound funny to the Chinese? If so, I'll be looking for another name. So the next question
would be: Is it better to have an authentic Chinese name as a foreigner or to have a
transliterated name?

As a nickname, I think it Ok. But as a formal one, consider a change.
According to the dictionary:
艾虎 (1)(动物)fitch (2) cloth tiger filled with mosa (worn by some people on the head
in the belief that it can ward off evils)

Sleddriver -

ok, so after a search of most commonly used surnames and given names I came up with this
combination:

劉知遠

Afterwards, I googled it and it seems that liu zhi yuan was an emperor for three years, the
founder of the Later Han dynasty.

what do you think?

Lu -

Great name in itself, but I wouldn't name myself after an emperor, it looks weird.

Generally foreigners get names that sound kind of like their original name, but follow the Chinese
naming conventions. If you want people here to think of a good name for you, it helps if you post
your real name (for the sound), and what kind of meaning you would like.

Sleddriver -

Ok, I'm abandoning the weird nickname as well as my late Han reign.

here's my info:

Surname: Curry
given name: Zack

As for meaning, I think wisdom and perseverence are important qualities.

monto -

How about 康哲 (kang1 zhe2)
康 is a common Chinese surname, while the meaning is healthy.
哲 means inteligent, big wisdom.

This thread ( http://www. From Beijing Chinese School.com/showthread.php?t=161 ) reminded me that we once had a
series of novels (popularized by mass media) that have created a big volume of vocab which is well
understood across the straits and widespread in almost all Chinese communities around the globe.

When taking about Jinyong and his great works, we usually discus his deep understanding on
Confucianism,
Buddhism (especially zen),
Taoism (especially “Book of change”)
Chinese ancient history(especially unofficial history)
Chinese poems & lyrics,
Chinese ancient music,
traditional Chinese medicine,
Chinese literatures essay books and all kinds of old books (古籍) (for example
《红楼梦》,《孙子兵法》 and so on)

Ect.

That’s why Jinyong is so great. If you want to show your deep understanding on Jinyong and his
great works, please simply pick up one of the points above and tell others your remarkable
insights (真知灼见) on it, which must be more interesting and meaningful. Do you agree?

Fellow historians,

I'm hoping to get an early start on my undergraduate military history thesis and was looking to
get some suggestions for a topic.

I would like to research an important tactical/operational level engagement for the Chinese either
during the Second Sino-Japanese war or during the Chinese Civil war. I might be getting a little
over-ambitious, but I think it would be really neat to write about a significant battle that has
not yet been thoroughly researched, studied, or recieved in-depth coverage.

I've only just begun to take a look at what is available out there, but the only engagement I've
found so far that fits the profile is the battle of Pingxingguan (1937). Any other suggestions?

I've also been told about a battle that occurred after the Huaihai, Pingjin, and Liaoshen
campaigns (1948,1949). I'm not sure about the name of the engagement, but it happened after the
KMT had pulled their forces south of the Yangtse. There, they were defended by their navy and air
forces and claimed their defense was impregnable. However, the under-dog communist forces
ultimately routed them (even using wooden boats at some points) and forced the nationalists from
the mainland. Does anyone have any more information about this battle?

Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.

thanks to all for the replies!

does anyone know of any smaller-time battles that exhibited especially clever/innovative Chinese
tactics during either the second Sino-Japanese War or the Chinese Civil War?

再见 means goodbye / farewell.

型 means being very stylish/trendy, showing one's own style / character.

过笼 means exceeding.

The song title could perhaps be translated to "farewell, the super-in".

Somehow this song title reminds me of "You're so vain". And the Chinese cover version
"最佳男主角".

I thought this was Japanese based on the decorative style of the vase, but I'm being told the
label is actually in Chinese. Can anyone help me with an English translation? I'm very curious...

Could you post a photo that shows the chinese characters more clearly? I see what I guess is
對公真 or 村公真, which doesn't mean anything. Are there fish patterns on the vase? If there
are then maybe the last character is 魚.

AdaEll -

First, thanks for your help. The vase has a swallow and many different flower motifs in 3 bands,
but I don't see any fish motifs. I tried to blow the characters up larger. Let me know... Adam
